Box Score AMHERST, Mass. – Amherst College senior Madeline Tank scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season to help pace the 11th-ranked Jeffs to a 2-0 victory over No. 18 Williams College in Saturday's NESCAC field hockey game at Gooding Field.
With the win, Amherst improves to 4-2 overall, 2-2 in NESCAC play, while Williams moves to 3-2 on the season, 2-1 in league action.
Amherst opened the scoring early as Annie Turnbull '16 received a pass on the top left side of the circle and placed a hard drive on net with Tank tipping the shot into the upper right corner of the net to give the Jeffs a 1-0 lead.
In the 19th minute of action, Williams threatened when Caitlin Conlon 15' put a shot on net that beat goalkeeper Emily Horwitz 17' only to have it called back for unintentionally hitting her foot prior to the shot.
Amherst had a chance to extend its lead with 2:21 remaining in the first half when Annika Nygren 16' and Tank connected a pair of passes which led to a blast from Nygren and a fantastic save by Ephs' goalkeeper Margaret Draper to keep the score at 1-0.
The Purple & White broke through with their second marker of the contest with 13:06 remaining in the game when Nygren sent a penalty corner feed to Elizabeth Turnbull '18 who tapped the ball to Annie Turnbull who then fired the ball into the back of the cage to give the Jeffs a 2-0 lead.
Williams fired its last salvo with just over three minutes remaining in the frame when it had a 3-on-2 rush, but stellar defense kept the Ephs off the board.
Amherst returns to non-league action on Tuesday, Sept. 23 at Springfield for a 7 p.m. tilt with the Pride.
