SOMERVILLE, Mass. – Amherst's Milton Rico '15 evened the match on a penalty kick in the 36th minute as the 10th-ranked Jeffs played Tufts University to a 1-1 double overtime draw in Saturday afternoon's NESCAC men's soccer game in Somerville, Mass.

With the tie, Amherst improves to 4-0-2 on the season, 3-0-2 in NESCAC action and extends its conference unbeaten streak to 25 games. Tufts moves to 5-1-2 overall, 3-0-1 in league play.

In a game that was tightly contested throughout, the Jumbos got on the board first with a scoring strike from Jason Kayne. Maxime Hoppenot created space on the left side and found Nate Majumder at the top of the 18. Majumder dished to Kayne and he finished with a goal in the top right corner.

After a hand ball in the box, the Jeffs had a chance to level the match through Rico who stepped to the penalty spot with just under 10 minutes to go in the half. He confidently buried the ball in the back of the net to even the game at 1-1.

Following the penalty kick goal, Amherst created two more dangerous chances just before halftime. Mikey Hoeksema '15 launched a corner that found Andrew Orozco '17, but his header attempt was tipped over the crossbar by Scott Greenwood. Off the ensuing corner, Greg Singer '16 rifled a shot from inside the 18 that snuck through a hole in the crowd, and Greenwood was again forced to make a stop.

In the second half, balanced play continued and each team had several chances to take the lead. Kayne and Hoppenot played a give-and-go on the right side but the Amherst defense did well to thwart the effort.

Later in the half, Orozco had a clear chance on net after a flick off a set piece, but he was off-target, hitting the outside netting. Kyle Volpe also had a chance late in regulation, but his shot skittered just wide, leaving the game 1-1 at the end of 90 minutes.

Tufts outshot Amherst, 5-1 in the overtime periods, but neither the Jumbos nor the Purple & White could score the game-winner.

Jeffs' net-minder Thomas Bull '16 made three saves in the stalemate.

Amherst returns to NESCAC play on Sunday, September 28 when it hosts Bates College at 2:30 p.m. at Hitchcock Field.
