Nygren Nets Four as No.16 Amherst Downs Trinity in Regular Season Finale 5-1

HARTFORD, Conn. – Scoring on her first three shots of the game, senior captain Annika Nygren recorded her first career four goal game to help lift the No. 16 Amherst College field hockey team to a 5-1 victory over Trinity College in its regular season finale Wednesday evening.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

  • After ten minutes of back-and-forth play with Trinity, the Purple & White took control of the game, scoring two goals in eight minutes.
  • Nygren notched her 10th goal of the season in the 13th minute of play, notching an unassisted tally to give Amherst a 1-0 lead.
  • Five minutes later, Nygren struck again for the Purple & White, corralling the pass from Elizabeth Turnbull '18 and rifling a shot past the Bantam netminder after a corner opportunity.
  • Amherst's final score of the opening half would come with 4:19 remaining on the clock. Sara Culhane '17 found Nygren who connected for her third goal of the match to give the Purple & White a commanding 3-0 advantage.  
  • The Purple & White would find the back of the net two more times during the second half while putting seven shots on frame.  
  • Trinity would cut the lead to two in the 50th minute, with Kelcie Finn finding teammate Clare Lyne for her sixth goal of the year.
  • Nygren was once again up to the challenge, scoring her fourth goal of the game in an unassisted effort less than six minutes later. She is now tied for fourth in the NESCAC in goals with 13.
  • Sophomore Caroline Fiore posted the game's final goal with under seven minutes remaining on the clock. She is now fourth on the team in goals with five.  
  • The Purple & White held the edge in shots 13-11 and corner opportunities 5-4.
  • Emily Horwitz '16 registered five saves in the win. Nygren posted a perfect shots-on-goal percentage in the matchup, putting a game-leading five shots on frame.   
  • Bantam goalkeeper Sophie Fitzpatrick recorded eight saves in the losing effort, while Chandler Solimine led Trinity in shots on goal with three.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Amherst has outscored opponents 18-2 in the final four games of the regular season. 
  • The Purple & White is slated to make its 14th appearance in the annual conference tournament in 2015.

UP NEXT

  • Returning to action on Saturday, Oct. 31, Amherst (No. 4) will host Williams College (No. 5) in quarterfinal play in the NESCAC Championship Tournament. The start time is yet to be determined.
  • Trinity has secured the sixth seed in the NESCAC Championship Tournament and will play a quarterfinal game on Oct. 31 at Tufts.
