Box Score AMHERST, Mass. – Four different Purple & White players scored as the 15th-ranked Amherst College field hockey team recorded a decisive 6-1 victory over non-conference opponent Springfield College Tuesday night.
With the win Amherst improves to 3-2 on the season, while the Pride drop to 4-3 overall.
Springfield got out to a fast start in the midweek matchup, scoring their lone goal on their first shot of the game just under eight minutes into play. Notching her team-leading fifth goal of the season, Maggie Kennedy collected a pass from Katie Gill just inside the circle and blasted a hard shot past Amherst netminder Emily Horwitz '16 on her right side.
Wasting little time the Purple & White evened the contest at 1-1 just over 90 seconds later. In an unassisted effort, tri-captain Annika Nygren '16 found the ball at the top right side of the circle and put a low shot past Pride goalkeeper Timarie Villa short-side.
With momentum fully in Amherst's favor, Timarie Villa would rack up an impressive eight saves before the next home team score.
In an effort to create an offensive opportunity, Sara Culhane '17 sent a ball towards net in the 21st minute of play that resulted in a skirmish inside the circle. Ultimately, the ball found the foot of a Springfield player and an Amherst penalty stroke was awarded. Tabbed to take the stroke,Caroline Fiore '18 would take advantage of the opportunity, sending a shot waist high into the netting and registering the game winner.
The final score of the half was tallied one minute later, as Mary Grace Cronin '18 cut across the circle and employed a reverse sweep to beat Villa on her lower left side in an unassisted play.
The second half featured three more Amherst goals, with first-year Kendall Codey recording her first collegiate point by dishing out an assist on a goal by Culhane in the 39th minute.
Cronin and Nygren would each notch one more goal for the Purple & White, with 16:26 and 12:20 remaining on the clock, respectively, to round out Amherst scoring.
The Purple & White held the advantage in both shots and corner opportunities, 33-13 and 7-4, respectively. Villa made nine saves between the posts for Springfield in 29:05 of action, while Emmalie Drake turned away 12 shots in a relief effort in the final 40:55. Horwitz finished the outing with nine saves for Amherst.
Amherst returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 26 when they head to Williamstown to take on NESCAC and Little Three rival Williams beginning at 11 a.m.
