Box Score SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – Four different Jeffs recorded a point as the No. 12 Amherst field hockey team opened the season on the road Tuesday evening with a 5-0 shutout victory against No. 18 and non-conference opponent Mount Holyoke College.
With the win, the Jeffs move to 1-0 on the season, while the Lyons fall to 1-2.
Amherst wasted little time in recording its first goal of the fall, as Katie Paolano '16 collected her own rebound and beat Mount Holyoke goaltender Liz DiCesare just two minutes into the 2015 campaign.
Undeterred by the early score, the Lyons responded to the opening goal with a stout defensive effort, holding the Jeffs to only six shots over the next 26 minutes of play. Scoreless action was broken at the 28-minute mark, as Sara Culhane '17 slipped behind the Mount Holyoke defense and notched her first goal of the season as the opening half winded down.
Proving to be too much for the Lyons in the second half, however, the Amherst offense would find the back of the net three more times before the final buzzer.
Taking advantage of a Jeff corner, Culhane '17 tallied her second goal of the game in the 44th minute after collecting a well-placed pass from Annie Turnbull '16.
Not finished dishing out helpers, Turnbull '16 registered a second assist just 10 minutes later, connecting with Annika Nygren '16 in the 55th minute to make it a 4-0 contest.
Culhane '17 capped off a career day by scoring Amherst's fifth and final goal with 9:32 remaining. The goal marked her second three-goal performance in the past 16 games.
The Purple & White held a decisive 22-8 advantage in shots and 11-4 edge in penalty corners.Emily Horwitz '17 made five saves in the win, while Liz DiCesare finished with 12 stops.
Amherst returns to the turf on Saturday, Sept. 12 to take on NESCAC rival Bowdoin College in its home opener at 12 p.m.
