Mammoths Post 5th Straight Shutout in 5-0 Win Over Rosemont in NCAA Tournament

BABSON PARK, Mass. -- The Amherst College men's soccer team opened the NCAA Tournament with its fifth straight shutout, blanking Rosemont College, 5-0, on Saturday in round of 64 action hosted at Babson College's Hartwell-Rogers Field. Three Mammoths scored their first collegiate goals in the second half.

The Mammoths (13-2-2), ranked second in the NCAA Regional Rankings and 19th in the nation in the latest United Soccer Coaches Division III poll, were powered by goals from five different players while holding the CSAC champion Ravens (12-5-1) to just one shot on goal. Amherst advances to face host Babson, the NEWMAC champions, on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. in the round of 32. The Beavers are ranked first in their region (a different region than Amherst plays in) and 23rd in the United Soccer Coaches poll.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Mammoths opened the scoring in the 19th minute when sophomore Declan Sung set up classmate Ada Okorogheye, a newly minted All-NESCAC selection, for his second goal of the season.
  • Senior Felix Wu doubled the lead just four minutes later, striking for his second goal of the season and giving the senior defenseman the first multi-goal season of his collegiate career.
  • The Mammoths netted another pair of quick strikes midway through the second half. Freshman Fynn Hayton-Ruffner blasted a shot that was saved by Rosemont goalie Todd Berman but classmate Ryan Gomez was there for the rebound and scored his first collegiate goal in the 73rd minute. Hayton-Ruffner's assist was his first collegiate point.
  • One minute later, sophomore Wyatt McCarthy weaved through the Ravens defense and scored his first collegiate goal to put Amherst up 4-0.
  • In the 85th minute, sophomore Max Landa became another debutante on the scoresheet as Hayton-Ruffner sent a chip shot through the box that was headed by a Rosemont defender and then headed into the goal by Landa for his first collegiate score.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • The 5-0 victory was Amherst's largest offensive output and margin of victory since a 6-1 win over Thomas in the same round of the 2019 NCAA Tournament.
  • The Mammoths held a 23-4 advantage in shots and led in shots on goal by a 13-1 margin. It was the seventh game this season and third game in the last four in which Amherst held its opponent to one or fewer shots on goal.
  • Junior Bernie White played the first half in goal without ever seeing a shot on goal before giving way to senior Kofi Hope-Gund, who saved the only shot he faced in the second half.
