MIDDLETOWN, Conn. --
Grant Robinson knocked down a three-pointer with 10 seconds left in overtime and
Tim McCarthy came up with a steal at the buzzer Friday night as the Amherst College men's basketball team picked up a big conference road win at #20 Wesleyan, 83-81.
Amherst improved to 12-6 overall, 3-3 in the conference while the Cardinals slipped to 16-4, 4-1 in conference play. Amherst is back in action Monday for a 1 p.m. game at Misericordia.
The Mammoths were led by great guard play all night from
Garrett Day and Robinson. Day finished with a game-high 19 while Robinson had 14 points, 12 assists, six rebounds and two steals in 38 minutes. McCarthy added 14 points and the crucial steal to seal the win, one of four for him on the night.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
* Wesleyan's Sam Peek scored a fast break lay-up with 2:11 remaining in the overtime period to give the Cardinals an 81-78 lead. Day hit a jumper with just under two minutes left to make it a one-point game. Neither team could score on its ensuing possession. On the Mammoths' final possession, Day hit the rim with his three-point attempt and the rebound seemed destined for a Cardinal until McCarthy dove to the floor to flick it to
Will Phelan. Phelan got the ball back to Day who turned it over to Robinson on the right wing, where the senior lined up his shot and hit nothing but net for the lead. Following a timeout,. McCarthy flicked the ball out of Cardinal shooter to seal the win for Amherst.
*Amherst trailed by eight, 59-50, with 10:30 remaining in the game.
Beluolisah Oranye played a pivotal role in the Mammoths' comeback, taking a feed from Robinson and laying it in for two, grabbing a defensive rebound that led to a three from McCarthy to cut the deficit to three, and then converting an old-fashioned three-point play when he ws fouled on a successful dunk. His successful free throw attempt tied the game 59-59 with 8:35 remaining.
* A Robinson trey with 1:35 remaining in regulation gave Amherst a 74-71 lead and Day extended that two four when he made 1 of 2 chances from the foul line with 46 seconds remaining. But Wesleyan scored the final four points to force overtime.

* There were 19 lead chances and 15 ties in the game total. This was the 124th meeting between the two schools on the basketball court.
