AMHERST, Mass. -- Senior
Beth Williamson scored a tie-breaking goal on as penalty stroke in the fourth quarter Sunday, helping the #7-ranked Amherst College field hockey team to a 3-1 victory over visiting Bowdoin College on Senior Day at Hill Field.
The win was the Mammoths seventh victory in a row and improved their record to 9-2 overall, 6-2 in the conference. The Polar Bears fell to 7-4 overall, 2-4 in the conference. Amherst will host Springfield Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. in its final regular-season home game of 2022.Â

Muffie Mazambani scored a goal for the fourth straight game, giving Amherst a 1-0 lead in the second quarter. Junior
Gwen Allen's entry pass into the circle off a designed penalty corner play was headed for Mazambani but was picked off by a Bowdoin back, but her clearing pass was intercepted by
Kat Mason, who took the ball into the right side of the circle before delivering a pass across to Mazambani stationed in front of the goal. The junior one-timed a shot into the top right corner of the goal for the lead with 5:30 remaining in the half.Â
* The score remained tied until the fourth quarter. With 7:44 remaining, Amherst was awarded a penalty stroke and Williamson converted, firing a shot out of the reach of the Bowdoin keeper for a 2-1 advantage. It was Williamson's fourth goal of the season.Â
*Â Just 2:12 later, the Mammoths made it 3-1 on a great effort from senior
Natalie Hobbs. Hobbs dribbled into the circle a the top right, cut back to her left, was stopped by a defender, circled around and fired off a shot toward the goal. Sophomore
Sam Maynard extended her stick and tipped a shot past the keeper for a 3-1 lead with only 5:32 left in the contest.Â
* The Mammoths played strong defense once again, not allowing Bowdoin a shot on goal in the second half, and giving up just one penalty corner opportunity.
