Mammoths suffer first defeat, fall 5-2 to Ripon College

AUBURNDALE, FLA. -- Despite two hits from Christian Fagnant Monday, the Amherst College baseball team suffered its first defeat of the season, a 5-2 decision to Ripon College at Lake Myrtle Park. 

Amherst stands at 1-1 after two days of its week-long stay in Florida. The Mammoths have a Tuesday doubleheader scheduled with Bowdoin at Chain O' Lakes Park beginning at 1:30 p.m.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS: 

* The Mammoths took a 2-0 lead with single runs in the first and second Monday against Ripon. Ryan McIntyre drew a lead-off walk and advanced to third on a failed pick-off attempt. Jack McDermott brought him home with a groundout to second base. 

* In the bottom of the second, Fagnant led off with a double to right field. After an out, Jackson Reydel scored Fagnant with a single to left.

* Senior Sachin Nambiar got the start for Amherst and held Ripon off the scoreboard for four innings. The Red Hawks tied the game with two in the fifth and scored the eventual winning run in the top of the sixth before adding two insurance scores in the top of the ninth to account for the final score.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Ripon hurler Mitchell Lukasik limited the Mammoths to five hits over eight innings of work, walking two and striking out three. Jake Pankratz worked around walks to Jack Dove and Reydel in the ninth to earn his first save.

* Nambiar took the loss, allowing seven hits and three runs, all earned, while walking three and striking out two over 5 1/3 innings. 

* Dove went 1 for 3 for Amherst, and Daniel Qin 1 for 4 with a double.
