AMHERST, Mass. -- First year
Jack McDermott reached base seven times in eight plate appearances Sunday, but it wasn't enough as the Amherst College baseball team was swept by NESCAC West Division foe Hamilton College, 13-3 and 7-5 at Memorial Field.
The double dip dropped the Mammoths to 5-13 overall and 1-5 in divisional play while Hamilton improved to 12-9 overall and 4-1 in NESCAC West action. Amherst is back in action Monday with a game at Salve Regina beginning at 3:45 p.m.
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS:

* Amherst chipped away at the deficit, scoring one in the third, two in sixth and two in the eighth to get within one at 6-5. In the third,
Ryan McIntyre lined a single to right with two outs and nobody on. McDermott followed with one of his four walks on the day, and
Jackson Reydel then ripped a single back up the middle that scored McIntyre.
*
Luke Padian ignited the sixth inning rally with a lead-off double.
Jack Dove then ripped a shot down the right-field line that the Continentals first baseman dove for and was able to slow down but not stop with his glove, leaving Amherst runners on the corners. After an out,
Christian Fagnant lofted a sacrifice fly to center field to score Padian.
Alan Dai drew a pinch-hit walk, and
Jack Boyle scored Dove with an RBI-single to right. After Boyle stole second, McIntyre struck out to end the frame.
* McDermott and Reydel started the Amherst seventh with back-to-back singles to left, but Hamilton hurler Jack Clougherty got a strikeout, pop out and foul out to quell the uprising.
* In the Mammoths eighth, Dai singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Boyle walked and a forceout left runners on the corners with two outs. McIntyre advanced to second on a wild pitch and McDermott plated both runners with a stinging double to left center that made it 6-5. Reydel was retired on a fly to center to end the eighth.
