Mammoths fall in series opener with Hamilton, 16-7

AMHERST, Mass. -- Ryan McIntyre and Jackson Reydel each went 2 for 5 with an RBI and a run scored Friday, but it wasn't enough as the Amherst College baseball team dropped a 16-7 decision to NESCAC West Division rival Hamilton at Memorial Field.

Amherst fell to 5-11 overall, 1-3 in divisional play. Hamilton improved to 10-9 and 2-1 in conference action. The two teams are scheduled to play a twinbill Saturday beginning at 12 p.m. back at Memorial Field, weather permitting.

 GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Hamilton took a 5-0 lead in the top of the second inning, but the Mammoths responded with a three-run bottom of the fourth. Jack Dove led off with a single and, with two outs, Daniel Qin was hit by a pitch. McIntyre floated a single to right field that scored Dove and made it 5-1. Christian Fagnant then blooped a two-run double down the left-field line just out of the reach of a pair of Continental players to make it a 5-3 game.

* Hamilton would score the next 11 runs to take a 16-3 lead after an eight-run top of the eighth inning. Jack Herlihy had a 3 for 5 day with 3 runs scored and 5 RBIs with two home runs and a triple.

* The Mammoths scored a run in their half of the eighth when Qin walked and stole second. Pinch-hitter Jack Sampedro then singled to center to score Qin.

* Amherst added three runs in the ninth. Jack Boyle drew a lead-off walk and Camden New doubled. Dove scored Boyle with a sacrifice fly. Reydel lined an RBI-single to left and, after pinch-hitter Alan Dai launched a long double to right, scored on an error.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Hamilton outhit Amherst, 16-10. Sachin Nambiar (0-3) took the loss, while Preston Perez (1-1) picked up the win for Hamilton with three innings of one-run relief.
