Bowdoin rally sends Mammoths to 15-14 defeat in NESCAC semifinal

MEDFORD, Mass. -- Bowdoin scored twice in the final 15 seconds of a NESCAC Tournament semifinal Saturday to send the Amherst College men's lacrosse team to a 15-14 defeat in a game played at Tufts University's Bello Field.

The Polar Bear rally ended a five-game win steak for the Mammoths, whose overall record slipped to 10-6. They will await word on a possible at-large berth into the 2022 NCAA Tournament. The NCAA selection show is Sunday at 9 p.m.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Saturday's semifinal was an incredibly even affair with a back-n-forth flow in which neither team ever held a lead bigger than three goals at any one time.

* Amherst scored 11 seconds into the game when Brock Gonzalez converted a pass from John Fitzhenry for a 1-0 lead. Bowdoin would answer with three straight tallies to take a 3-1 lead. A second Gonzalez goal in a man-up situation for Amherst -- of an assist from Connor Guest -- with 9:43 left in the first would start a string of three straight Mammoth goals, the last coming from Ben Bruno coming from Brodie Rayment with 5:38 left in the stanza to which gave Amherst a 4-3 lead.

* It was 4-all after one quarter, but early in the second, Amherst senior PJ Clementi began to take over, scoring three straight Amherst goals, the second and third of which came 11 seconds apart and snapped a 5-5 deadlock.

* Bowdoin would answer with four consecutive tallies for a 9-7 halftime lead.

* The Mammoths had a very strong third quarter, outscoring Bowdoin 5-2 to take a 12-11 lead into the final 15 minutes. Amherst scored the first three quarters of the third, erasing that two-goal deficit to take a 10-9 lead on a goal from Clementi off a Tanyr Krummenacher assist with 11 minutes left in the stanza.

* A sensational behind-the-back, no-look goal from Jake Bennett with 2:11 left in the third accounted for the Mammoths' 12-11 lead. They extended that lead by scoring the first two goals of the final frame, tallies by Gonzalez and Guest that gave them a 14-11 lead with 9:15 remaining. Bowdoin made it 14-12 with 7:40 to go.

* Neither team scored over a 6 minute, 15-second span following Guest's goal. Mitch Likins had a pair of big saves in that time span.

* With 1:34 to go, Bowdoin's Matt Ward scored to cut the Mammoth lead to 14-13. Bowdoin regained possession with under 50 seconds to play. Following a flurry of shots, Will Byrne, tied the game with 15 seconds remaining. Ethan Barnard won the ensuing faceoff for the Polar Bears, charged downfield, was almost derailed by multiple Amherst defenders, but was able to get off a diving shot that found the net with eight seconds left in regulation.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* The shots were even at 45 each. Bowdoin had 37 groundballs to the Mammoths' 24. Each team won 16 face-offs.

* Likins finished with 17 saves for the Mammoths.
