#13 Mammoths second-half rally thwarted by late Bowdoin goal in 3-2 loss

BRUNSWICK, Me. -- The Amherst College field hockey team stormed back from a two-goal deficit with two second-half goals Sunday, but a late goal left it with a 3-2 loss to Bowdoin College. 

The Mammoths are now 6-5 overall and 4-4 in conference play. They will play at Springfield College Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. Bowdoin improved to 8-3 overall and 3-3 in NESCAC play.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Bowdoin came out strong in the first quarter, holding te Mammoths without a shot or penalty corner for the first 15 minutes. 

* A cluster of penalty corners was awarded to the Polar Bears with about 5 minutes left in the frame. Amherst goalkeeper Sara Nidus made a save on the first shot she faced off a corner, and junior back Charlotte Domittner had a defensive save for the second game in a row as she cleared a ball off the lone to keep the game scoreless. 

* Only 46 seconds into the second quarter, Bowdoin took a 2-0 lead when Mackay Bomner scored. 

* Neither team was able to muster a shot on goal after the second Bowdoin tally, and the Polar Bears went into halftime with a 2-0 lead. 

* Amherst came out strong in the third quarter and created a penalty corner. Justine Liguori had a shot off the corner but it was saved by a Bowdoin back. However,, she was awarded a penalty stroke and buried a shot past Bowdoin goalkeeper Julia Arsenault. 

* Kat Mason had a shot on goal late in the stanza, but it skittered just wide. 

* Bowdoin came out looking to add to its lead early in the fourth quarter. The Polar Bears were awarded three straight penalty corners and created shots on each opportunity. The first was block by a Mammoth player and then Nidus came up with two huge saves to keep Amherst within one. 

* After withstanding that barrage, the Mammoths found the equalizer with 11:22 remaining in the game. Off a penalty corner, Mason fired a shot that was saved by Arsenault. However, Kate Smith, who had inserted the ball on the corner, crept back into the play and was there to tap in the rebound to tie the game at 2. 

* Neither team was able to muster a scoring opportunity until late in the game, when Caroline Higgins scored the game-winner with 2:40 left on the clock. 

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Bowdoin out shot Amherst, 12-7, in the game and had 12 corners to the Mammoths 4, including a 7-1 advantage in the fourth quarter. 

* Nidus finished with 4 saves, the Mammoths with 5. Arsenault made 1 for Bowdoin.
