AMHERST, Mass. --
Chris Hammond set career-highs in points (33) and three-pointers made (7) Tuesday night while
Ryker Vance and
Will Scherer posted double-doubles to help the Amherst College men's basketball team dominate Colby-Sawter in the LeFrak Gymnasium, 93-46.
The Mammoths won their third straight and improved to 3-1 while Colby-Sawyer goes into the Thanksgiving break at 3-3. Amherst is back in action Tuesday, November 28th back at home vs. Rhode Island College. Tip-off is 7:30 p.m.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Amherst opened the first half with an 8-0 run, closed the first half with a 13-0 run and led by halftime, 41-17. The opening 20 minutes saw the Mammoths outscore CSC 30-6 in the paint, and out rebound the visitors, 22-9. The Mammoths shot 51.4 (18 of 35) from the floor in the first half.
* Amherst opened the scoring after a
Mohammed Alausa steal on which he missed the contested lay-in, but watched as Vance cleaned up with an offensive rebound and putback for the 2-0 lead. Vance then scored in transition off a feed from Hammond,who moments later got in on the scoring with an easy lay-up. Alausa then found Vance underneath the basket for an easy lay-in and the aforementioned 8-0 lead.
* With 5:15 to go Amherst led 28-17 when Alausa drove the hoop and was fouled, hitting both freebies to make it 30-17. With 3:56 to go, Alausa found Vance in the paint again for another lay-up and a 32-17 lead. On the Mammoths next trip down Alausa missed a lay-in but Scherer followed up with a power dunk off his offensive rebound and it was 34-17. After buckets from Vance and
C.J. Mitchell, Hammond punctuated the run with a three-pointer from the top of the key for a 24-point halftime lead.
* Hammond owned the second half, scoring 23 of the Mammoths' 52 points by shooting 9 of 12 from the floor and 5 of 6 from beyond the arc. As a team the Mammoths shot 66.7 percent (20 of 30) from the floor in the second half.
* Colby-Sawyer came out of the locker room at halftime charged up and scored the first four points of the second stanza to cut its deficit to 20. However, Amherst answered with its own 10-0 run to make it a 30-point lead. Hammond got it started with a lay-up off a feed from Scherer. He followed that immediately with another bucket, driving the baseline for a lay-up. Alausa followed with a putback of a rare Hammond miss. A
C.J. Mitchell steal led to a Scherer bucket, and then Mitchell capped the run with his own field goal for a 51-21 advantage.
* Hammond took over again down the stretch, scoring 11 consecutive Amherst points in a 74-second span. With the Mammoths leading 65-31, Hammond drained a trey with 7:58 left in the game. He then scored on a lay-up off a
Bobby Sommers pass. He then took another pass from Sommers and drained a three-pointer. Following a Sommers defensive rebound, Hammond received a pass from
Johnny McCain and knocked down yet another three-ball for a 76-35 Mammoths lead with just 6:44 left.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Amherst shot 58.5 percent (38 of 65) from the floor in the contest. The Mammoths outrebounded the Chargers 47-29. From the paint, they outscored their visitors by a 56-14 margin.
* Hammond had 33 points, 6 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal. Vance notched 16 points and 11 rebounds. Scherer had 10 points, 13 rebounds, 6 blocks and 4 assists. Somers finished with 7 points.
