AMHERST, Mass. -- A furious second-half comeback from the Amherst College men's basketball team went for naught Tuesday night when Albertus Magnus guard Antonio Bonilla hit a three-point shot with just five seconds on the clock and the Mammoths' attempt at an equalizer was blocked at the buzzer.
Albertus Magnus escaped LeFrak Gymnasium with a 73-71 victory and improved to 7-1 on the seasons while the Mammoths fell to 5-3. Amherst is at York (NY) College Thursday night for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- Amherst lost the lead early in the game at 7-5, struggling to keep the ball with 13 turnovers in the first half
- Albertus continued to disrupt Amherst throughout the half , scoring 20 points off turnovers.
- Amherst ends the first half unable to close the lead and trailing, 41-27.
- Amherst came out much stronger in the second half with an 8-0 run with Will Schererscoring off a nice hook, pulling Amherst within eight points at 41-33.
- Amherst's Marc Garraud scored off a transition lay-up making it 52-47, closing the gap with 10 minutes left.
- Chris Hammond came up big with a three to tie the game with eight minutes left. Scherer grabbed a rebound and was fouled. He converted the three-point play to cut the home team's deficit to four at 65-61.Hammond then drained another three, and following a Scherer block, another trey from Garraud saw Amherst tie the game again at 67-67.
- Ryker Vance briefly gives Amherst its second lead of the game with two free throws putting them up 69-67 with 52 seconds left, until Albertus gained the lead back with a three pointer and only 30 seconds left.
- Vance then went inside the paint with and hit a jump shot that rolled in for two putting Amherst back in the lead at 71-70 and only 12.8 seconds left.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Career high of 20 points for Will Scherer who also led both teams in rebound with 14.
- Amherst did slightly better at the foul line with a 65.4% percentage and at the three point line with a 36.4% percentage.
