Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 7 Mammoths cruise past Bobcats, 4-0

AMHERST, Mass. -- Ioannis Hadjiyiannis scored two second-half goals Saturday to help the No. 7th-ranked Amherst College men's soccer team blanked conference foe Bates, 4-0, in its first game on Hitchcock Field this season.

The Mammoths improved to 5-0-1 on the season and will host Colby Sunday at a new time of 1 p.m. back on Hitchcock Field.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Amherst took a 1-0 lead with 18:58 remaining in the first half. Declan Sung delivered a perfect throw-in from the right sideline that found the head of Simon Kalinauskas, who quickly flicked the ball deeper into the box, where it found Laurens ten Cate, who settled the ball with his body, then placed a right-footed shot past the keeper on the short side of the goal for the game's first score.

* The Mammoths were able to take a 2-0 lead into halftime after senior Shawn Rapal scored with six-and-a-half minutes remaining. Ignacio Cubeddu had a direct kick from about 40 yards and he put a delicate touch on the ball, floating it directly to Rapal in the box. Rapal quickly grounded the ball as he moved to the right and left-footed a shot into the upper right-hand corner of the net for the two-goal advantage.

* In the second stanza, the Mammoths kept the pressure on. Fynn Hayton-Ruffner narrowly missed a couple of goals on shots from inside the box. Finally, with only 2:34 to go, Cubeddu lined up a free kick from just outside the left side of the box and drilled his attempts directly onto goal, where Hadjiyiannis headed it past the keeper.

* Hadjiyiannis was not done yet. Only 30 seconds later, he scored again. After some great corner work from Hayton-Ruffner, the ball came to the feet of Andrew Tremante, who found the feet of Hadjiyiannis unmarked in the box, eight feet from the goal. Hadjiyiannis beat the keeper easily for the four-goal lead with only 2:04 remaining in the game.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Amherst out shot Bates 10-1 in the second half and 17-12 overall. The Mammoths took 7 of their 9 corners in the second stanza and finished with a 9-5 advantage.

* Max Landa came up with four big saves for the Mammoths.
