Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Mammoths nipped by Tufts at home, 2-1

AMHERST, Mass.A pair of second-period goals from Tufts University was just enough to defeat the Amherst College men's hockey team,  2-1, at Orr Rink Froday night. 

The Mammoths fell to 8-5-0 overall, and 4-3-0 for in-conference play. The Mammoths are set to play again tomorrow at 3 p.m.and will face Connecticut College back at Orr.. 

GAME HIGHLIGHTS 
  • Max Theissen's center-ice movement led to the Mammoths' first goal. Positioned to Theissen's left, Ben Kuzma received the puck and passed it to Tyler Bourque in the high slot for the initial shot. After collecting the rebound, Kuzma flicked the puck over the goaltender, putting the Mammoths in the lead at 5:19 into the opening period.
  • The Jumbos evened the score during a power play after a sequence of defensive passes at neutral ice and into the Mammoth's zone. Defenseman Sam Miller made the pass to Tyler Sedlak at the right point, who then set up Harrison Bazianos. Bazianos passed to teammate Cole Dubicki in the right face-off circle, where Sedlak managed to score off the rebound at 4:54 into the second period. 
  • Off another power-play opportunity for Tufts, Jacob Iida intercepted the puck in mid-air. This allowed Brendan Fennell to win the fight for the puck in Amherst's zone thereafter. Fennell dished the puck to John Mulvihill in the high slot, where he fired the puck into the net just as the power-play ended 10:23 into the second period. 
  • The Mammoths pulled goaltender Connor Leslie with 2:15 lef tin the game for an extra skater and created several scoring opportunities, but the Jumbo defense was able to turn them away. 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • The Mammoths outshot the Jumbos 31-27.. 
  • Tufts went 1-5 on power plays, whereas Amherst went 0-2 this evening. 
  • The Jumbos won 37 of the 69 face-offs they took, with Brennan Horn winning 12 out of the 20 he took. 
  • Connor Leslie saved 25 of the 27 shots he faced on net, and Peyton Durand saved 30 of the 31.
