Mammoths fall to Bantams in four sets

HARTFORD, Conn. -- After winning the first set, the Amherst College volleyball team fell short against Trinity College, losing 1-3 (25-17, 16-25, 19-25, 19-25). 

The Mammoths fall to 10-8 overall and 1-7 in the NESCAC. Trinity advances to 17-3 and 5-3 in the NESCAC.

The Mammoths will face non-conference opponent Emerson College in Boston next Saturday, October 26th at 1 pm.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

* The Mammoths had a hot start, taking a 9-4 lead off of kills by Anaya Thomas and Brielle Renwick. Kinsey Cronin joined in on the attack, notching 4 kills to advance the score to 18-13. Despite the Bantams' best efforts to narrow the gap, the Mammoths claimed the first set 25-17.

* The second set was tied 9-9, with Thomas and Charlotte Rasmussen helping the Mammoths, but the Bantams never trailed after this point. Sofia Camilo, Renwick, and Cronin each earned one kill, but Trinity won the second set 25-16.

* Trinity started the third set strong, taking the lead 10-5. Two kills and a service ace from Rasmussen helped close the gap, making it 13-11. Ellie Myers tallied three kills, keeping the Mammoths in the match, but the Mammoths' efforts weren't enough, and the Bantams claimed the set 25-19.

* In the final set of the match, the two teams traded off points to make it 9-9. The Mammoths won the next 6 of 8 points with kills from Myers and Zosia Teraszkiewicz, but the Bantams didn't let up. Trinity took the lead at 17-16, then went on a five-point run to make the score 24-18. Despite a final kill from Myers, the Bantams won the set 25-19. 

BY THE NUMBERS

* Rasmussen tallied 9 kills and 5 service aces on the day.

* First-year Ellie Myers had 7 kills and one solo block.

* Lizzie Papalia led the Mammoths with 18 digs. Renee Liou and Rasmussen had 10 each.
