Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

#2 Amherst make it nine unbeaten with 0-0 stalemate versus #23 Wesleyan

AMHERST, MA — After two wins on the road last weekend, the #2 Amherst College women's soccer team returned to Hitchcock Field to host the #23 Wesleyan University Cardinals. In an exciting end-to-end game with both teams looking dangerous in attack, the points were shared between the two sides and the score ended 0-0.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
  • The game kicked off with high energy as both teams quickly challenged each other's goalkeepers with shots on target in the opening five minutes. Riley Buehler's attempt for the away side was blocked by Amherst's senior keeper, Mika Fisher, while a shot from Wesleyan's Alyssa Huynh would have found the net if not for a crucial save by the Cardinals' goalkeeper, Molly Brumbach.
  • The intensity remained for the first fifteen minutes, with Wesleyan's Katie O'Connell testing Fisher twice more and Amherst's Abby Schwartz recording another shot on target. Schwartz later came close again, but her attempt just missed the post.
  • The Cardinals kept up the pressure on Amherst for the remainder of the first half. They registered three shots, two of which were on target, but couldn't break through. The score stayed locked at 0-0 as the teams headed into the break.
  • The second half unfolded differently, with Amherst dominating the play, outshooting Wesleyan 6 to 1. Mika Fisher had a quiet second half in goal, as Wesleyan couldn't muster any serious attempts. Amherst, however, looked strong in attack. Patience Kum, who has already scored four goals this season, put Brumbach to the test with a solid strike at the 55-minute mark, but this was saved. The final moment of potential danger came in the 80th minute when Brumbach made another crucial save off a shot by junior Ella Johnson. Ultimately, neither team managed to find the back of the net, and the match ended in a scoreless draw.
BY THE NUMBERS:
  • Amherst had 10 shots (5 on goal); Wesleyan had 8 (6 on goal).
  • The Mammoths committed 8 fouls - 2 fewer than Wesleyan's 8.
UP NEXT:
  • Amherst now holds a 6-0-3 overall record (4-0-2 versus NESCAC opposition).
  • Up next: Amherst's next match will be versus non-conference opponents, the Western New England University Golden Bears. This will take place on Tuesday at 4pm in Springfield, MA.
