Colby edges #20 Amherst in thrilling season opener decided in final race

WATERVILLE, Maine – Sophomore Maeve Kelley won three events as the Amherst College women's swimming and diving team was edged by NESCAC rival Colby College, 151.5-147.5, in a season opener for both teams that came down to the final event at the Alfond Athletics & Recreation Center.

The Mammoths, ranked 20th in the nation in the latest CSCAA Division III poll, return to action on Sunday, November 24, hosting Middlebury at noon for the home opener in Pratt Pool.

MEET HIGHLIGHTS:

* Kelley led the Mammoths in the distance events, claiming victories in the 1000-yard freestyle in 10:24.08 and the 500-yard freestyle in 5:09.38. Kelley capped her day with another win in the 200-yard individual medley, touching in at 2:10.16.

* Senior Ali Lacroix dominated the breaststroke events, winning the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:06.56 and the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:24.31.

* Sophomore Lucy Smith showcased her sprinting prowess, winning the 50-yard freestyle in 24.65 seconds and the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 54.07 seconds.

* Senior Sydney Bluestein had an outstanding day in the diving events, winning the three-meter competition with a score of 245.93 and the one-meter competition with a score of 252.23.

* The Mules snatched the win in the final event of the day, snagging the first and third spots in the 200-yard freestyle relay to pull ahead in the team score and claim victory.
