Mammoths settle for split with Wesleyan

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- Nicholas Giattino fired six innings of one-hit ball in the first game Saturday, pitching the Amherst College baseball team past Little 3 rival Wesleyan, 5-1.

The Mammoths settled for a split of the doubleheader after dropping the nightcap, 7-5. sits at 9-4 overall and 1-2 in NESCAC West play after the split. The Mammoths host Westfield State Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Amherst 5, Wesleyan 1, Game One

* Giattino allowed the Cardinals just one hit over six innings while the Mammoths scored one in the first, one in the fourth and three in the sixth to build a 5-0 lead. 

* In the first, Jack Sampedro was hit by a pitch leading off the game. He took second on a wild pitch and third on a groundout, scoring when Ryan McIntyre laced a single into center field for a 1-0 lead. 

* In the Amherst fourth, McIntyre drew a lead off walk, stole second and third before scoring on a wild pitch to make it 2-0 Amherst.

* In the Mammoths' sixth inning, McIntyre led off with a triple to right field and scored when Luke Padian followed with a single. After an out, Christian Fagnant lined a single to center that scored Padian for a 4-0 lead. After a single by Charlie LaFreniere and a walk to Tyler McCord loaded the bases, Jack Boyle lofted a sacrifice fly for a five-run advantage. 

* Giattino retired nine straight Wesleyan batters between lead-off walks in the third and the sixth. In the sixth, he hit the following batter and walked the next to load the bases with no outs. He struck out the next batter for the first out, walked the next to force in a run, then recorded another strikeout for the second out before inducing a flyout to end the threat. 

* Amherst lefty Tyson Luna came on in the seventh and retire the Cardinals 1-2-3 to wrap up the victory. 

* Amherst had 7 hits. McIntyre was 3 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Fagnant was 2 for 4. 

Wesleyan 7, Amherst 5, Game 2

* Amherst took a 1-0 lead in the first when Sampedro led off the game with a single and one out later scored when McIntyre l=smoked his second triple of the day, another shot to right field.

* Wesleyan would build a 6-1 lead before the Mammoths rallied in the top of the sixth, scoring four times to make it a 6-5 game. LaFreniere, McCord and Sampedro had RBI-singles in the inning, with McCord scoring on a wild pitch  as well. 

* Sampedro and McCord were each 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored in the loss. 

* Jacob Ribitzki took the loss, going 4 2/3 innings and being charged with six rns, five earned. Yoon Chae pitched well in relief, allowing one run on one hit in 3 1/3 frames. He did not walk a batter and struck out six.
