AMHERST, Mass. --
Ryan McIntyre drove in six runs and
Jack Dove had four hits Tuesday as the Amherst College baseball team produced the most runs in its modern era with a 30-7 victory at Clark University.
The Mammoths banged out 20 hits in the win and drew 20 walks -- tied for the fourth highest total in Div. III history and tied for the most walks in NESCAC history (single game). Since 2001, Amherst had not scored more than 25 runs in a game, accomplishing that twice; on March 10, 2020 in a 25-7 win over Rivier, and on April 19, 2001, in a 25-9 win over Westfield State.
Amherst and Williams played in the first-ever collegiate baseball game in 1859, with Amherst triumphing, 73-32.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* The Mammoths parlayed three Clark errors and five hits in a six-run second inning to take a 6-0 lead. With one out, Dove singled and stole second.
Christian Fagnant walked.
Charlie LaFreniere lined an RBI-single to center for a 1-0 lead. An error and two passed balls allowed Fagnant and LaFreniere to score.
Javier Irizarry got things started again with a walk.
Jack Boyle singled and both runners moved up on a balk.
Jack Sampedro then lofted the rare 2-run sacrifice fly as both runners scored on his fly out to center.
Jack McDermott then singled, moved to second on an errant pick-off throw and scored when McIntyre beat out a grounder to short ans the throw got away for another error.
* Clark fought back and trailed only 7-4 when the Mammoths put a three-spot up in the top of the fourth to regain the six-run advantage. Once again, Dove got things started with a one-out single to shortstop. Fagnant followed with a single into right field. A throwing error got Dove to third and he scored on a wild pitch for an 8-4 lead. LaFreniere then drilled a single to center that scored Fagnant. Irizarry singled and Boyle followed with another single, this one scoring LaFreniere for a 10-4 lead.
* Amherst scored two more in the fifth and three in the sixth to build a 15-5 lead. The Mammoths then erupted for 11 runs in the top of the 7th to take a 26-5 lead.
Luke Padian had an RBI-double in the frame, while Dove, McDermott, Boyle and
Adrian Caron had RBI-singles.
* In the Mammoth's 8th, McIntyre crushed a grand slam home run to get Amherst to 30 runs.

* Dove was 4 for 6 with 4 runs scored and an RBI. Amherst had 18 singles in the game, one double and one home run. McDermott was 3 for 7 with 4 runs scored and 2 RBI. Boyle was 3 for 3 with 3 runs scored and 3 RBI. Irizarry was 2 for 4 with 4 runs scored and 2 RBI. McIntyre was 2 for 5 with 6 RBI. Sampedro went 0 for 1 with 3 walks. Fagnant was 1 for 2 with 3 walks and 4 runs scored.

Yoon Chae was the winning pitcher, going 2 2/3 of relief and giving up just one hit, walking no one and fanning two.. He is now 2-0.
