Cardiac Mammoths sweep two thrillers from Trinity, 11-10 & 7-6

AMHERST, Mass. -- Jack Boyle's one-out RBI-single in the bottom of the eighth inning of a scheduled seven-inning game gave the Amherst College baseball team a walk--off 7-6 victory and a sweep of their Saturday doubleheader versus Trinity College at Memorial Field.

The Mammoths had held on to capture the opener of the twinbill 11-10 when Boyle caught up to a line drive to center field with two outs in the top of the seventh inning (both games were scheduled seven frames). That gave first-year Adrian Caron his first save. Caron would then score the game-winning run on Boyle's single in the nightcap.

With the two thrillers, Amherst ran its win streak to seven and its overall record to 16-4, while the Bantams slipped to 9-13 overall.  The two teams are scheduled to meet again Sunday for a 12 p.m. contest at Memorial Field, this time for one nine-inning affair.

Game 2, Amherst 7, Trinity 6

* The Mammoths trailed 3-0 but rallied with three runs in the bottom of the third to tie the game. Ben Smith led off with a booming double to left and Boyle followed by beating out a grounder to short, then taking second as the throw skipped past the first baseman. With one out, Jack McDermott scored Smith with a sacrifice fly. With two outs and the bases load, Jack Dove lined a two-run single into right-center field to tie the game.

* Trinity took a 6-3 lead in the top of he seventh with some dramatics of its own. With two outs and noby on base, back-to-back singles brought up Andrew Thomas Park, who smacked a three-run homer to straightaway centerfield. The Mammoths answered back quite quickly as Jack Sampedro and McDermott singled to open the bottom of the seventh and Ryan McIntyre then crushed a 3-2 pitch over the fence in left-center field for a game-tying three-run home run.

* Trinity put runners on first and second with two outs in the top of the eighth. Yoon Chae came on in relief of Sampedro and induced an inning-ending groundout. In the bottom of the frame, Smith dropped a single into left field with one out. Caron pinch-ran for him and stole second. Boyle followed and line a single to center that scored Caron with the winning run.

* Smith and McDermott were each 2 for 3 in the win, while Boyle was 2 for 4.

* Chae improved to 3-0 after getting one out for the win. Tristan Kim started for the Mammoths and went the first five, giving up seven hits while walking three and striking out two. He was charged with three runs, all earned.

Game 1, Amherst 11, Trinity 10

* Amherst had leads of 3-1 and 11-3 but had to hang on for dear life to post the victory.

* The Mammoths took a 2-1 lead with two runs in the bottom of the second. Dove ripped a double. With two outs, Charlie LaFreniere drove a ball deep the opposite way to right field where it fell in for an RBI-triple. Tyler McCord then lined a single back up the middle to score LaFreniere for the 2-1 lead. Amherst added a run on a Dove sacrifice fly.

* Trinity scored twice in the top of the fourth, but the Mammoths exploded for eight runs in their half to take an 11-3 lead. LaFreniere got the inning started with a single. McCord followed with a single that sent LaFreniere to third. A wild pitch allowed McCord to take second and LaFreniere to score to make it 3-2. After the first out, Sampedro powered a ground-rule double to deep center that scored McCord for a 5-3 lead.

* Sampedro stole third and McDermott walked. McIntyre and Luke Padian then lined back-to-back RBI-singles for a 7-3 lead. A walk to Dove loaded the bases. After a strikeout, LaFreniere lofted a deep fly to right center that cleared the fence for a grand slam home run -- his second hit of the inning -- and put Amherst up 11-3.

* It stayed that way until there were two outs and the bases were loaded in the top of the seventh. Three straight Bantam hits brought home five runs to make it 11-8. Caron replaced Tyson Luna on the bump and walked the first batter he faced. A wild pitch moved the runners up and Park then roped a two-run double to make it 11-10. Caron then hit a batter and unloaded a wild pitch to runners on second and third before getting the final batter to line out to Boyle in center to end the game.

* Nicholas Giattino earned the win, going five frames and allowing six hits and three runs, two earned, while walking five and striking out five. He improved to 3-0 on the season.

* LaFreniere went 3 for 4 with 5 RBI, a triple and a home run in the win. McCord and McIntyre were each 2 for 4.
