WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- The Amherst College baseball team kept its hopes for a NESCAC West Division title alive Friday with an 14-6 win over rival Williams at Bobby Coombs Field.
The Mammoths approved to 21-8 overall, 6-4 in the West, while Williams slipped to 9-20, 2-8 in conference play. The two teams will meet in Amherst Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Amherst jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Jack McDermott got things started with a one-out single. He stole second and scored when
Ryan McIntyre ripped an RBI-double. Jack Dobve singled McIntyre to third but was thrown out trying to steal for the second out of the inning.
Jack Sampedro and
Luke Padian then came through with back-to-back RBI-doubles driven to right-center field for the three-run lead.
* The Mammoths added four runs in the second inning. Back-to-back Eph errors put
Christian Fagnant and
Tyler McCord on first and second with no outs. After an out, McDermott crushed a two-run triple to right center for a 5-0 lead. McIntyre drew a walk and Dove lined a sacrifice fly to right to score McDermott. McIntyre stole second and then scored on an RBI-single by Sampedro for a 7-0 Amherst lead.
* The Mammoths led 7-1 when they added two more in the fourth. McDermott drew a lead-off walk before being forced at second by McIntyre, who scored when Dove boomed a triple to right field. Dove scored on a Sampedro single for a 9-1 Amherst lead.
* Amherst added four runs in the top of the sixth aided by three Eph errors to take a 13-3 lead. Sampedro had a triple in the frame and Fagnant had an RBI-double to cap the uprising.
* Fagnant concluded the Amherst scoring with a solo home run -- his team-leading 5th of the season -- to right field in the top of the ninth inning.

* Amherst had 16 hits in the win. Sampedro went 4 for 4 with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored. Dove was 3 for 4 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored. McDermott was 3 for 5 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored.
