Mammoths Celebrate 10 Seniors with Sweep of Williams

AMHERST, Mass. -- There were no actual fireworks at Memorial Field Saturday as the Amherst College baseball team celebrated its 10 seniors -- Alan Dai, Camden New, Javier Irizarry, Jack Dove, Luke Padian, Jacob Ribitzki, Trevor Gasgarth, Christian Fagnant, Will Marshall and Nicholas Giattino -- but the Mammoths created enough of their own, parlaying 23 hits, 13 walks and 7 hit batsmen into an 18-5 and 10-3 sweep of rival Williams.

With the sweep, the Mammoths improved to 23-8 overall -- the most single-season wins in the J.P. Pyne era -- and 8-4 in the NESCAC West Division. The Mammoths secured the second seed coming out of the West and will play host to the third-seed oout of the East Division, Bowdoin College, in a NESCAC quarterfinal best-of-three series on May 4th and 5th (if necessary). Saturday's doubleheader begins at 12 p.m. Amherst has a game Wednesday prior to the quarterfinal. It is at UMass-Boston for a 7 p.m. start.

Game 1, Amherst 18, Williams 5

* The Mammoths built a 3-0 lead after two innings and broke open the seven-inning affair with an 11-run fifth inning.

* In the bottom of the first, Jack McDermott crushed a ground-rule double to right center with one out. Ryan McIntyre singled and when McIntyre was thrown out trying to steal second, McDermott scampered home with a run and a 1-0 lead.

* In the Mammoths' second inning, Jack Sampedro lined a lead-off single and took third when Padian singled. Charlie LaFreniere then lined a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Sampedro. A bases-loaded walk to McDermott forced in yet another run.

*  Amherst led 3-1 when they scored 11 runs in the fifth. McDermott led off with a single and stole second, taking third on Dove's single. Sampedro walked to load the bases. Padian and LaFreniere then drew walks to force home runs. Fagnant drew a bases-loaded walk for another run. Tyler McCord ripped an RBI-single. Jack Boyl had a two-run single to left and by the end of the frame it was 14-1 Amherst.

* Both teams scored four runs in the sixth inning. For the Mammoths, all four came on one swing of the bat as Sampedro launched a grand slam home run to left after three walks loaded the bases with one out.

* McDermott finished 3 for 3 with 4 runs scored, one RBI and 2 walks. Sampedro was 2 for 3 with 4 RBI, 3 runs scored and 2 walks. LaFreniere was 1 for 1 with 3 RBI. McCord was 2 for 4 with an RBI and run scored.

* Giattino improved to 4-1, going the first 5 1/3 frames and giving up eight hits and five runs, all earned, while walking six and striking out three. Adrian Caron finished the game with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Game 2, Amherst 10, Williams 3

* The Mammoths built a 5-0 lead after two innings. In the first, McDermott was hit by a pitch and with two outs, stole second. Dove was hit by a pitch, Sampedro walked and Padian came through when he laced a soft liner into lft for a two-run single.

* Amherst added three in the second. Ben Smith led off with a double. With two outs, McDermott walked. McIntyre then lined a shot into the left-center field gap, scoring both runners. Dove followed with a single down the right-field line that score McIntyre for the 5-0 lead.

* Williams clawed back into and the score was 5-3 heading into the bottom of the sixth. Christian Limon led off with a single and Smith lined a double down the left-field line, sending Limon to third. Irizarry scored Limon with a sacrifice fly to center. Boyle then doubled down the right-field line to score Smith. McIntyre then doubled down the left-field line to score McIntyre for a 8-3 lead.

* Naaveen Narayanan picked up the win with five solid innings. He allowed six hits and three runs while walking one and striking out seven. Jack Sampedro threw three scoreless innings of relief to picked up his third save. He gave up two hits and one walk while fanning four.
