OVERTIME MAYNARD STRIKE LIFTS #11 MAMMOTHS TO 2-1 WIN OVER WPI

AMHERST, Mass. – Senior Sam Maynard scored with 1 minute and 34 seconds remaining in overtime Wednesday night to clinch the No. 11th-ranked Mammoths a 2-1 win over Worcester Polytechnic Institute at Hill Field.

With the victory, Amherst improved to a 3-0 overall while WPI fell to 1-3 on the season. The Mammoths hit the road this Saturday, Sept. 14 to take on archrival Williams at 11 a.m.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Freshman Caroline Busler gave the Mammoths an early lead with 3:03 remaining in the first quarter when she stole a loose ball inside the circle, turned and slipped a shot into the net to notch her third goal of the season.

*Neither team would score in the second quarter, but Amherst had several opportunities. Just 2:34 into the period, senior Sam Maynard drew a penalty corner for the Mammoths, but tight defense from the Engineers blocked senior Abbey Kays's strike. 5:10 later, a great individual effort by Maynard led to another chance after she dribbled into the circle, side-stepped her defender, and slid a shot toward the net, but an outstretched kick from the Engineer goalkeeper ended her momentum.

*WPI was awarded its first penalty corner with 4:22 left in the third quarter, but strong defense and a well-placed clearance from freshman Katie Savino left the Engineers scoreless heading into the fourth quarter.

* The Engineers gained the equalizer with just 3:25 left in the contest when, off a penalty corner, a bouncing shot by Lauren Meinhold slipped by the Amherst defense and into the goal to take the match into overtime.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

*Amherst finished with an 18-6 advantage in shots and a 13-5 edge in shots on goal.

*Amherst had an 8-3 lead in penalty corners in regulation time, but the gap narrowed to a tight 4-3 advantage in the extra 6-on-6 session.
