Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

#3 Mammoths cruise by Curry, 5-0

AMHERST, Mass. -- Alyssa Xu and Cara Mancini each had a goal and an assist Friday night as the #3-ranked Amherst College women's hockey team improved to 9-1-0 overall with a 5-0 whitewashing of visiting Curry College. 

Amherst wll host Worcester State Saturday at 3 p.m. back at Orr Rink.

Curry fell to 4-7-1 overall. 

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* After the first 20 minutes the game was still scoreless despite the Mammoths creating a 21-3 advantage in shots. Amherst had a power-play for the final 1:42 of the first period but could not score. 

* The Mammoths broke the game open with two goals within 24 seconds of each other early in the second period. Mancini opened th scoring 2:34 into the middle stanza when she collected the puck from a skirmish to the right of the Curry goal, did a quick you turn back up through the right face-off circle and fired a shot into the upper 90 of the goal on the short side for a 1-0 lead. 

* Only 24 seconds later, the Mammoths had doubled their lead. Maeve Reynolds made a beautiful pass to Xu in the slot but the Amherst forward's shot was blocked. Gretchen Dann won the carom over on the left boards and shuffled the puck back to Xu, who skated through the top of the face-off circle and into the high slot where her wrist shot found its way into the goal with 17:02 to go on the clock.

* Amherst added a third goal before the conclusion of the period. Some great work by Xu caused a turnover in the bottom right corner of the Curry zone. Xu touch the back along the boards and Bea Flynn collected it, skating to her left into the top of the face-off circle and rifling a quick shot into the top right of the goal on the short side for the 3-0 advantage with 12:03 remaining in the frame. 

* Emily Hohmann and Ayla Abban added tallies in the final five minutes of the game to account for the final score. 

BY THE NUMBERS: 

* Maleigh Tittel took the start in goal for Amherst and stopped all 13 shots she faced in the game to earn the shutout. 

* Amherst finished with a 47-13 shot advantage in the game.

* Kelsey Stewart and Tammy Zhu each had two assists on the night for Amherst. 

* The Mammoths won 30 of the game's 40 face-offs. Anna Baxter won 10 of 11 draws she took and Reynolds 9 of 12.
