Late goal slips Colby by #3 Mammoths, 3-2

WATERVILLE, ME. – With 4:04 remaining in the third period, Colby College's Molly Lefebvre scored a decisive late goal, breaking a tie and securing a 3-2 victory over #3-ranked Amherst College at Jack Kelly Arena.

Goals from junior Gretchen Dann and first-year Sami Lester in the first two periods gave the Mammoths the edge, nearly clinching a win in this weekend's rematch against the Mules.

The Mammoth's record settles to 14-5-1 overall and 7-4-1 in NESCAC play.

Amherst hits the road again next week for a conference match-up against Trinity College on Friday (Feb. 14), with puck drop set for 7:30 p.m.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Colby's Anya Jiang collected the puck in the high slot after an interception of a clear out of the Mammoth's zone and slipped it to Courtney Schumacher off to her left. Schumacher sent a lifted shot that found the back of the net and put the Mules on the board at 5:42 into the opening period.
  • After receiving the puck in the right corner of the Mules' zone, Amherst's Maeve Reynolds sent the puck back to Emily Hohmann, stationed at the right point. Hohmann ripped a slap shot that deflected off a Colby stick for Dann to capture behind the net. Dann circled to the high slot and lifted a shot into goal at the 11-minute mark of the first period.
  • With 17:40 remaining in the second period, Mammoth Natalie Fu sent the puck up for Annabel Raffin to skate onto getting into a scramble behind Colby's net. Lester picked up the loose puck for a wrap-around shot that slipped through Colby goaltender Grace Caligiuri's pads for the Mammoth's second goal.
  • To even the score, two goals a piece for each team, Colby's Lulu Gray forced a turnover in the Mammoth's defensive end. In the 3-on-2 offensive opportunity for Colby, Lizzy Hamel received the puck in the right face-off circle. Hamel passed across the goal to Martodam for the deflection into the goal at 11:45 in the final period.
  • With 4:04 remaining in regulation, Colby's Lefebvre circled back to Amherst's blue line with the puck and back into the slot for the initial shot. After a scramble in the crease off the rebound, Lefebvre collected the puck on her backhand and lifted it into the net.
