Mammoths erupt for 27 runs in win over Hamilton

CLINTON, N.Y. -- Ryan McIntyre, Charlie LaFreniere and Justin Orridge each drove in four runs Saturday as the Amherst College baseball team cruised to a 27-1 victory over NESCAC West Division rival Hamilton at the Continentals' Loop Road Complex.

The scheduled second game of Saturday's doubleheader was moved to Sunday at 12 p.m. as a 3-hour, 15-minute rain delay forced the first game to start at 3:15 p.m.

The win moved the Mammoths to 16-14 overall, 8-3 in West Division play. They will host a best-of-3 NESCAC Tournament quarterfinal May 3-4.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* The Mammoths scored nine runs in the top of the first and never looked back after that, scoring twice in the second and 10 more times in the third to build a 21-0 lead.

* In the first, Amherst loaded the bases with no outs for McIntyre, who laced a two-run single to open the scoring. LaFreniere followed by lining a two-run single to right field for a 4-0 Amherst lead. After a walk to Orridge and a pitching change, Jack McDermott grounded an RBI-single through the right side for a 5-0 lead. Following an error that scored another run, Jack Boyle ripped a two-run single for an 8-0 lead.

* In the Amherst second, a pair of walks and a hit batsman loaded the bases for J.J. Grimes, who stroked a two-run safety to make it 11-0.

* In the top of the third, LaFreniere drew a bases-loaded walk to force home a run and Orridge followed by rocketing a drive deep into the left-center field gap for a three-run, bases-clearing double for a 15-0 lead. Later in the inning, Orridge came up for his second at-bat of the inning and lined an RBI-single to give two hits and 4 RBIs in the same frame.

* In the Mammoths' sixth inning. Gabriel Ciechanover stepped to the plate for his first collegiate at-bat and promptly crushed a solo home run over the fence in left-center field. Two outs later, senior Nick Addison launched his first career home run over the fence in right field.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* McIntyre went 3 for 5 with a walk and 4 RBI. LaFreniere finished 2 for 2 with 4 RBI and 2 walks. Grimes went 3 for 5 with 3 RBIs.
