Amherst, Mass – The Mammoths defeated NESCAC Foe, Bates College, in four sets on Friday night (25-16, 25-20, 21-25, 25-20).
The Mammoths advance to 4-1 while the Bobcats fall to 5-2 on the season. The Mammoths will try to carry the momentum as they face Tufts at home tomorrow, Saturday, September 20th at 2pm.
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
* The Mammoths and the Bobcats traded points in the first set, with both teams notching strong kills from the start. The score was tied at 9-9 when a kill from Charlotte Rasmussen and an ace from Judith Subirats-Bosch turned the momentum in favor of the Mammoths. Addison Lau earned the Mammoths three more kills and two service aces to continue the offensive plays, and the Mammoths won the set, 25-16.
* The second set was another battle with both teams showing their offensive firepower. Rasmussen and Lau earned early kills for the Mammoths, with Sofia Camilo and Tiana Richardson also earning a block. Another kill from Lau, a service ace from Audrey Krichev, and a critical block from Abby Nichols and Allie McLaughlin gave the Mammoths the lead, 15-13. The Mammoths didn't trail again in the set and a service ace from Stella Jacey ended the set, 25-20.
* The third set was hard-fought with both teams going on scoring runs throughout the set. The score was tied, 11-11, when Bates earned four straight points to take the lead. The Mammoths continued to fight, with Richardson and Rasmussen scoring kills and Camilo and Richardson combining for a block. Bates maintained their lead with two straight kills. The Mammoths brought it to 21-23, but Bates kept the lead and earned the set, 25-21.
* In the fourth set both teams fought hard to keep the match alive. Chideraa Ngwadom notched an early kill and solo block to start the set for the Mammoths. Towards the middle of the set, the Mammoths earned 6 of 7 points to take the lead, 13-10. Subirats-Bosch had a service ace and the Mammoths had two more blocks in the set. Despite the best efforts of the Bobcats, the Mammoths took the set to win the match off a kill from Camilo, winning 25-20.
