Amherst, Mass – The Amherst College Volleyball team fell to Tufts in four hard-fought sets on Saturday afternoon (20-25, 32-30, 20-25, 19-25).
The Mammoths move to 4-2 overall, 1-1 in the NESCAC, while Tufts advances to 8-1 overall, 2-0 in the NESCAC. The Mammoths will hit the road for their next match, facing Hamilton College on Friday, September 26th at 7pm.
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
* The Jumbos came out strong in the first set, winning the first four points. The Mammoths had early kills from Charlotte Rasmussen and Addison Lau to keep them in the match. Chideraa Ngwadom had a solo block and Sofia Camilo notched a kill to tie the match, 11-11. The teams traded points when the Mammoths went on a 4-point run to take the lead, 18-17. The Jumbos didn't let up, though, scoring the next 7 of 9 points to take the set, 25-20.
* The second set was a long, hard-fought battle. The two teams traded the lead back and forth, with offensive plays for the Mammoths coming from Rasmussen, Ngwadom, Lau, and Abby Nichols. Allie McLaughlin and Ellie Meyers also had crucial kills. Down by 3 late in the set, the Mammoths had a critical 3-point run to tie the set, 22-22. The Mammoths held the Jumbos at match point, forcing the match to continue. Late offensive heat came from Rasmussen, and a combined block by McLaughlin and Nichols won the set for the Mammoths, 32-30.
* In the third set, the Jumbos took an early lead, 11-5. The Jumbos continued to score but the Mammoths pushed the momentum their way late in the set, scoring 6 of 7 points, narrowing the gap to 20-16. Ultimately, it wasn't enough and the Jumbos took the set, 25-20.
* The Jumbos came out strong in what would be the final set, despite strong kills from first-year Gabrielle Hines, Nichols, and Meyers. The Jumbos didn't waver, though, maintaining their lead throughout the set. Judith Subirats-Bosch had a service ace and Hines had another kill in an attempt to keep the Mammoths in the match, but Tufts took the set, 25-19.

* Abby Nichols led the Mammoths with 10 kills. Rasmussen notched 9 on the afternoon.
* The Mammoths had 5 service aces to Tufts' 13.
