ITA Regional Championships Day One: Four Amherst pairs qualify for Doubles Round of 16, Tina She progresses in Singles

BRUNSWICK, ME - After playing in the MIT Invitational last week, their first tournament of the 2024 Fall season, the Amherst College women's tennis team returned to competition this weekend. The Mammoths played in the first of the three-day Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III New England Regional Championships hosted by Bowdoin College. In a large singles and doubles draw, the tournament attracts all of the best Division III tennis players in the region. 

RESULTS HIGHLIGHTS:
Doubles:
  • Today, the first two rounds of doubles matches, the Round of 64 and Round of 32, were played. Amherst had some very successful results, with four pairs qualifying for the Round of 16 tomorrow.
  • After a bye in the Round of 64, Junior Katja Jules Viberg and First-year Cody Huang beat Rachel Cranley and Stephanie Woodbury of Tufts in the Round of 32 with a score of 8-6. 
  • Seniors Amy Cui and Katie Hart also had a bye in the Round of 64, before they beat Riya Matharoo and Dana Kamal of Babson in the Round of 32 with a score of 8-4.
  • Junior Karolina Dobiecka and First-year Tina She (Amherst) won two consecutive matches. The pair beat Julia Zhang and Ahn Lin of Williams, 8-3, and upset a seeded pair, Sarai Dorismond and Alessandra Cristiani of Babson, 8-1. 
  • After Senior Mia Kintiroglou and Sophomore Greta Stechschulte won 8-4 in the Round of 64 versus Springfield College opponents, Senior Deliala Friedman and Sophomore Lily Dounchis, who had a bye, then beat their teammates in the Round of 32 in an all-Amherst matchup, 8-7.
Singles:
  • Like the doubles tournament, the Rounds of 64 and 32 were played in the singles today. Tina She is the only Mammoth remaining in the singles tournament. The Canadian Beat Natalie Hu of Tufts, 6-1 6-4, and then Lucinda Gatsiounis of Wesleyan, 6-3, 6-0, to reach the Round of 16.
  • Elsewhere, Lily Dounchis and Cody Huang both earned wins in the Round of 64 before falling short in their next respective matches.
UP NEXT:
  • The Mammoths will now rest and recover to prepare for their upcoming matches tomorrow. Four Amherst pairs will battle it out for a place in the Quarterfinals of the doubles tournament, and Tina She will play her Round of 16 singles match.
