5/14/2025 6:42:00 PM

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – After another day of play interrupted by weather, the Amherst College women's golf team will spend Wednesday night in third place at the 2025 NCAA Division III Championships. The Mammoths completed the first round and were beginning play on the back nine of the second round when lightning in the area halted play at 4:01 p.m.

Despite the interrupted rounds, the Mammoths had an outstanding day on the courses at Kingsmill Resort. Amherst began the day by completing the first round on the River Course and sat in sixth place in the 34-team field after all teams concluded the first round, shooting a 16-over score of 304 as a team.

First-year Mekhala Costello finished the first round tied for sixth on the individual leaderboard as well after completing a 1-over round of 73 that included four birdies.

First-years Jia An and Annie Dai each shot 4-over rounds of 76, while sophomore Abigail Kim and first-year Joelle Kim (no relation) each carded a 7-over 79 in the opening round.

The Mammmoths moved to the Plantation Course for the second round and teed off around noon in some of the later groups of the day. Amherst's strong play continued with the Mammoths playing at 6-over as a team through 10 to 12 holes, putting the Mammoths at 22-over for the tournament. Emory completed the second round, firing a scorching 1-under round as a team, and leads the tournament with a 10-over 586.

Indidvidually, Costello birdied the 10th hole, her final hole of the day, to pull back to even par for the round and 1-over for the tournament, placing her in a four-way tie for fifth place, just one stroke behind the leaders, when play was suspended for the day.

Joelle Kim is at 1-over through 11 holes, putting her at 8-over for the tournament in a tie for 42nd place. An was a stroke behind in the second round and sits at 6-over for the tournament, tied for 26th place. Abigail Kim is at 3-over through 12 holes and 10-over for the tournament to tie for 60th place, while Dai is at 4-over through 12 holes and tied for 42nd place in the tournament at 8-over par.

The Mammoths will resume play on the Plantation Course on Thursday (May 15) at 8 a.m. to finish the second round. The top 15 teams will then advance to the third round, which is now slated to begin with a shotgun start no earlier than 12:30 p.m.
